As a photographer, I am always looking for ways to improve on my skills. The pose in this maternity portrait is a popular one but upon closer inspection, it could have been done better. Dad appears to be in an unnatural pose as he leans over Mom’s shoulder. The heart shape he is attempting to make with his hands is not at a good angle to be seen. What could I have done differently? For starters, it is important to take note of what is going on with your subjects so that proper adjustments can be made before the portrait is ever taken. I should have had Mom spread her legs apart just a bit to bring her down and make him taller than her. Then I should have made sure his hands were in a better position to form the heart shape. These simple changes would have given me a much different portrait. What else could I have done to make this stand out more?
